Flight School Types
Find Flight Schools in Your Area...
There are two types of flight schools. These are named Part 61 and Part 141. The types refer to the parts of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) under which they operate.
Part 61: a flight school can train this type without obtaining a special Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. But they need to follow the statutory requirements under the CFRs. The minimum flight time required to receive the private certificate is 40 hours. Part 61 also states what areas and topics need to be covered during the flight training and how much the required flight experience has to be for each rating and certificate. The commercial pilot certificate requires 250 flight hours.
Part 141: for this part the flight schools need to obtain the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. The flight school also needs to meet the requirements of the FAA. The minimum flight time requires to receive the private certificate under part 141 is 35 hours. The commercial pilot certificate requires 190 flight hours.
Many flight schools who train their students under the Part 141 rules, also offers classes for student who would like to be trained under the Part 61 rules. The type of school you want to choose depends on the amount of time you are available for, your needs, and other factors.
Next to these two parts there is also a third type of flight schools. These flight schools are called the nationally accredited training institutions. The institution bears serious consideration by prospective pilots who plan to have a professional career as a pilot.
