Interior Design School Career Opportunities

Find Interior Design Schools in Your Area...

The first purpose why students are studying at an interior design school or program is to become an interior designer. Interior designers furnish and space the interiors in private homes, public buildings, and other institutional facilities. They do this with the help of their education, creativity and their experiences. Interior designers often work independently and have their own business or they work freelance. The work often requires the interior designer to be available to work flexible hours.

Commercial interior designers - plan and design the insides of public buildings. Many commercial interior designers specialize in particular types, because each type of building has specific design needs and limitations. A commercial interior designer can be specialized in:

• Athletic centers

• Banks

• Hotels

• Medical facilities

• Offices

• Private homes

• Restaurants

• Schools

• Shopping malls

Exhibit designers - work with curators to design building installations like cases, pedestals, display tables, wall and lighting fixtures, entire galleries, etc.

Interior decorators - concentrate on the aesthetics of an inside space. This includes how the chairs will complement the carpeting, how the paint will look under different lights, how the upholstery will feel, and so on. Interior decorators try to make an inside space most fit for use by the people who live, work, visit or play there.

Residential interior designers – they focus on patterns of foot traffic, the cabling and space demands of everything from refrigerators to home theaters and computer systems, home security, child safety, and much more.

Space planners – they arrange spaces. A space planner makes sure that the contents a room or building must contain are situated on a way that the room or building remains as space-efficient and comfortable as possible.
