A nursing degree can be earned at several levels. First you need to get a Registered Nursing (RN) degree which can be received by three major educational paths. These three educational paths are the Bachelor of Science Nurse (BSN), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and a Diploma. They are offered at colleges and universities.
The three Major Educational Paths to Registered Nursing (RN):
Bachelor of Science Nurse (BSN)
The BSN degree is the most recommended degree. Many nursing jobs will pay you based on your level of education instead of on your experience. The BSN program takes 4 years to complete. It also gives you a stepping stone for further education into areas of specialization.
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
The AND program focuses on the practical applications of nursing. This program takes two years to complete.
Diploma
After completing either of these programs, every nurse takes a board exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN). This exam is known as the NCLEX-RN. Usually a hospital-based program, with a course study of two to three years in length leading to the award of a diploma.
The main work of Registered Nurses is to promote health, prevent disease, and help patients to cope with illness.
Baccalaureate Degree (BSN Degree)
If you want to do a master or doctoral level program you need to have a baccalaureate degree. Graduates of a Baccalaureate degree will be eligible for licensure as a registered nurse. They can work in a variety of inpatient care settings and ambulatory care settings, including hospitals, clinics, home health care, community agencies, schools and industries.
Master's Degree
The master’s program builds on knowledge, skills and competencies of baccalaureate nursing education. It is offered by senior colleges or universities. A master’s degree is required if you want to do a doctoral study. People with a master’s degree in nursing are prepared to work in a variety of advanced practice nursing roles. Examples of these roles are Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Anaesthetist, Nurse Midwife or Nurse Administrator.
Nursing Doctorate Degree
When you have a baccalaureate degree in another field, you can join the nursing doctorate program. A post baccalaureate nursing doctorate curriculum is provided to enter into professional nursing practice, and preparation for initial licensure. The program is more focused on developing advanced practice nurse specialist skills, usually in evaluation, outcome research, entrepreneurship, leadership, education and/or clinical practice. This program takes four years to complete. To prepare leaders who can affect change through system redesign and evidenced-based decision making in a variety of clinical, organizational, and educational settings is the goal of a nursing doctorate program.
Associate Degree
The associate degree program prepares you to provide Registered Nurse care in numerous of settings. This program takes about 2 to 3 years and is offered at senior colleges and universities. The emphasis of the colleges and universities is placed on course work in general education and nursing. Graduates are prepared to practice in structure care settings.
As you can see there are several programs to get your nursing degree. The degree which is most appropriated to you depends of course on the nursing job you want to specialize in.
Travel nurse 19
A nursing job as a travel nurse is becoming more and more popular among nurses these days. It has already been more than 20 years that the nursing industry found his origin. There were a few agencies which began to offer hospitals a short-term solution for the seasonal fluctuations of the population and their staffing shortage. The demand was especially high in the states like Texas, Florida, Arizona and California. Still there is a high demand of travel nurses. The main reason is the staffing problems which still exist in the United States.
Travel nurses have many choices when it comes to the place they want to work. As a travel nurse you can choose to travel all over the country or if you rather stay near your hometown you can also choose to have an assignment in your local area. The period you want to stay in a certain area is another choice which you can make as a travel nurse. Some nurses rather work in one place to experience all the seasons of the area, while others prefer to travel every few months. A nursing job as travel nurse provides you the opportunity to increase your earnings and allows the flexibility to select a new employment situation every few months. Next to these opportunities you will also meet new people and experience different ways of life while enhancing your career.
