National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
To choose a nursing school it is important to ask if the school you want to attend is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). This commission is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the national accrediting body for all types of nursing education programs. When the school is accredited it will give you a better chance of earning a licence, and of being admitted to a four-year school or graduated program later in your nursing career.
University
There are several level programs where you can choose from if you want to study nursing at a university. A university nursing school offers programs which takes traditionally about 3 to 4 years. You can finish your nursing study at a university with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctorate degree or an associate degree.
Non-University
Accelerated Career Learning
If you are a post baccalaureate student you can change your career to nursing with the accelerated career learning program. This type of program normally takes about twelve months (one year), instead of the traditional three or four years. Baccalaureate prepared nurses will have a tremendous number of job opportunities, because of the current nursing shortage.
Online Programs
There are a number of possibilities to study nursing joining an online nursing program, especially with the technology of these days. Reregistered nurses will have the most advantage in these types of programs because they already have some clinical experience. This program is also available for entry level students, although they will have a hard time completing a degree program online because of the lack of clinical experience. One of the advantages of attending an online nursing school is that you will be able to gain entry with a degree level qualification and you will still be able to continue that education during your career. You will take advantage of new skills and knowledge which maximizes your job prospects.
Distance / Blended Learning
Distance / blended learning is another possibility to study nursing. The difference with an online program is that distance learning can involve books, CD-ROMS, audio, video, multimedia communications, or some combination of these with other traditional delivery methods. Blended learning is a format that allows the student to access all means available for learning, removing any barrier to securing his or her educational goals.
There are many types of degrees in nursing. Which degree you need to have depends on the nursing job you want to specialize in. The required degree will be important when selecting a nursing school.
