The role of technology in education seems to be boundless; the upcoming years will definitely display educational technology advancements.

Technology has been very friendly to student’s learning. Education resources and coursework from assignments to daily lessons can e stored in flash disk –and laptops.

Recently, schools worldwide had engaged their students with high technology by providing them with laptop computers. These portable computers are provided by the particular institution to speed up learning and familiarized technology-native students with the latest technology.

For example is Pekin High School which facilitates their students with personal laptops provided that they utilize such given technology in line with learning purposes. The librarian grants each student after informing their parents with the terms and policies behind the use of the laptop; laptops will be confiscated if not properly used.

Technology also draws parents closer to monitoring their children’s progress. Aside from the usual mobile phones, email services have been established by some private high schools. Universities worldwide conferences have been made possible with mobile learning facilities owned by distance learning universities.

The efficient use technology has healed high school student dropout rates in many campus schools and universities. Instructions for those untraditional learners have been personalized through the cable wires. Virtual high schools have increased the graduating student rate.

Open learning have given unprivileged, unreachable and remote continents the chance to experience free and open source education through the browser.

Web-based instruction provided military professionals with advancements in their fields while defending the state’s security. Other professionals have upgraded credentials because of online education.

“Education is a never ending process” –technology proved it; being old has been never a hindrance. Online courses have been very flexible and suitable for adult learners with busy schedules.

Technology when incorporated with education will ease up learning; bringing a lot of advantage to students and teachers alike.

School terms for the newly built special education boarding school had just commenced.
25 children with Asperger’s syndrome are expected to experience an environment especially designed for their exceptional needs.

Specialized teaching history began last August 23 2010 for these gifted kids. These kids who were viewed as low performers in their previous traditional schools are above intelligent children in real time. Kids with Asperger’s syndrome and high functioning autism lack social skills and very vulnerable to bullying. They are also easily intimidated with aggressive kids compared to the normal ones.

These needs cannot be furnished by public schools; often it is unsafe for special kids. Fortunately the Talisman Academy had made it possible and designed a safe learning haven for them.

The academy is under the Talisman Program which has been leading summer camps for special children for the last 30 years. The academy is oriented in determining ways of providing these kids with the right curriculum for success.

Molly Shiver-Blake, the education program director ensures that these kids with non-verbal learning disorders are taught well so they can be returned to their traditional schools prepared and eager to experience the outside world.

The academy’s student teacher ratio is 45:35; these means 35 staff members for 45 students which ages within 12-20. 8-11 students per class will be schooled to develop social skills, self-management and key functioning skills as well as science and math, life skills such as; cooking, and cleaning up their own meals.

Special academies are elite group of institutions in the land; only comprise of few numbers while there could be 2 out of 10,000 children with Asperger’s syndrome.

Marilyn Broadbent –a retired educator experience and observed New York students with such kind of autism to be struggling hard in some activities like gym sessions; these students often find it hard to cope up with the noise. She finds it necessary for such kids to enroll in boarding schools like Talisman Academy.

UK students are being troubled on finding available places in certain universities as the nation is going through a university crisis.

The clearing process surges as universities find ways on designating the rising number of applicants on remaining available courses and degree programs which are mainly competitive are mostly getting full in many UK universities mainly law, economics, psychology, and history.

Last year, the available courses ranged from 48,000 but this year the numbers were cut down to 30,000 places which are giving the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission Service) lot of calls nationwide. UCAS reported 385,000 placement secured students and 185,000 pending for clearance. UCAS said that this year was the most competitive year compared to the last 10 years.

Several universities have closed down admissions. Few are Bristol and Nottingham University which reported unavailable places and several courses of York, Loughborugh, Royal Holloway and Queen’s University, Belfast. Unfavorably, UCAS reported clearing numbers almost halved from 2009 to 18,000 this year.

Esex University competitive courses such as; politics, economics and modern language are reported to be out of places. Reading University fell short of places for British and EU applicants however admissions are left uncapped for international students. Kingston University reports massive attempts on student admission over 40,000 and clearing conformation service by 1 pm. While Bath University had 19,000 applications for it’s 3000 places.

Thames University opened 46 course offerings and amazingly one course closed within 15 minutes. According to reports, there are 660,000 prospective applicants and 200,000 of them will not be admitted due to shortage of places after many universities opted not to offer clearance and slashed available places.

Meanwhile, the higher education minister, David Willets apologized for the nationwide inconvenience and even suggested that those who missed admissions take alternative education program such as; enrolling in further education colleges or take apprenticeships. However teaching organizations condemned Willets for his simple suggestions and expressed disgrace on degrading the applicants ambition when he suggest that unlucky applicants should take on less competitive courses available.

Nurse practitioners worldwide which have completed university education and landed nursing jobs on Australia are currently facing the risk of deportation. These registered nurses which are coming from India, Thailand, China, and Philippines are expected to enhance English proficiency in order to be saved from deportation and compromising of their nursing jobs.

After spending enormous amount of money from attending university education and community colleges, Indian nursing student Prince Joseph will have to meet Australia’s English proficiency through an eligibility program in order to save his nursing job. Prince Joseph describes it an act of discrimination and an additional burden to pursue another education program set down by the International Language Testing System.

The English proficiency standard has been raised from 6.5 to higher 7 laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Board. Such policy which has been replicated from UK made registered nurses working in the Australian land very anxious. Some nurse practitioners complained about the rush and most nurse practitioners will not be able to complete an education program regarding English proficiency in just a short span of time considering that mostly of the nursing job visas are going to expire very soon.

Nursing graduates and those who will be graduating are surprised by such nursing career change before it came into effect last July 1. While most nurse practitioners which have gone through paying their nursing education program and continuing education with their salaries and selling their properties in order to land a lucrative job in Australia have labeled such policy change as absolute bureaucratic debacle.

Such dilemma will make nurses worldwide unemployed after deployment which has a double edge effect on the nursing practice industry both domestic and international aspect. Considering that many nurse practitioners from these countries are finding employment abroad despite the need for local and national nurses. And the only solution thing that these troubled nurses is to re-apply for migration, having efficient English language education program in order to pass the new standard of IELTS.

A home schooling program at Maryville, Tennessee educates children with the middle age pedagogy. The home-based program utilizes classical education curriculum in training young learners. The results are still unseen but the program is becoming popular in the state.

Young students learn in a four walled environment and taught with classical curriculum including grammar, rhetoric and logic. Directors train children with discipline and a lot of memory work. Directors teach students inside but they also conduct sessions on Dotson Memorial Baptist Church in Maryville.

Renae, who has a son diagnosed with asperger’s syndrome, transferred his son from public school to the home school program. According to him, his son has an excellent memory but has problems on social aspects and home school would be fitted for him.

Directors said that children will be taught with strong education foundations breaking subjects into grammar writing and math drills. Students will not be isolated even kept inside because there are 10 students accepted for the program. Parents will also get the privileged of monitoring their children at the same time socialize with fellow parents.

Classical Conversation will open its house on August 31 2010 and will held classes at Dotson Memorial Baptist Church, 814 Dotson Memorial Road, Maryville. They have also programs launched at Lenoir city and Knoxville which accepts enrollees year round.

Classical education roots from the western culture and traditions and a glance back to the ancient Greek philosophy of educating man. The curriculum takes great consideration on the systematic framework of teaching based on man’s development phases. The education program are compose of different levels chronologically; the primary, secondary and tertiary education.

In primary education, young children which are considered as sponges are taught with the Socratic Method; grammar, logic and rhetoric. Secondary education is incorporated with astronomy, arithmetic, music and geometry whereas tertiary education comprises law, theology, military strategy, medicine and science.

“Decent human beings with a deep respect for human dignity”, the words of Fr. Johan Pahk –university president of the Catholic University of Korea as the school envision to instill their students with social values. This year, the school strives for competence and bringing their school to the top list of globalized schools nationwide.

But contradictory to the basic means, the university endeavors to procreate and incept developments internally. The university gears for improvement without exporting their students to reputable schools worldwide.

The initiative gave birth to the Global English Outreach program which primarily stresses English proficiency inside a dormitory. The students and professors are required to be sheltered under and English dormitory. Such dormitory will provide home learning to 1,200 students and professors.

Freshmen students and professors will then be intensely immersed to heavy English for about a month in all aspect of activities inside the shelter. Students will be classified and grouped into their own proficiency levels.

Another branch of development which will be focused by the catholic university is in developing warmhearted leaders of the nation. To start the project, the school point’s heavy emphasis on education programs integrated with catholic values.

The university will incorporate Ethical Leaders Rearing Program (ELP) which is a special humanities course consists of problem solving and improvement of humanity. Creativity, Analytical and Problem-solving Competence (CAP) is also an education program component that sharpens student critical thinking abilities.

Catholic University of Korea will focus on Humanities but will not set aside competence and technical skills in their globalization scheme. The university said to penetrate on competence other schools do not posses. This is coordinated with its goal being top among all schools and universities of Korea.

Recently, the university has eight hospitals which give them an unfair advantage over other schools, several campuses in Seoul, Hyehwa-dong and Banpo-dong.

China’s strive for producing high quality students lays the burden on young imaginative children. The heavy pressing of education on kindergarten students marked the increase of children attending extra education programs and parents being anxious of their child’s future.

The goal of the Chinese government to increase the number of preschool and kindergarten attendees by 75 percent in 2020 marked lines on playful children’s faces and it’s beyond tradition where children are left to play until 6 before enrolling them to primary schools according to Du Juan, an education editor. Reports say that Chinese children are enrolled an additional three hours on other day school programs beside the daily 7:30 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. schedules which their parents consider normal.

“Students are taught to memorize instead of developing creative minds” Du says. The learning processes differ in every age and forcing these children to pursue excellence by immerging them into heavy academics is very unhealthy. And instead letting students discover learning by their selves, the bases of achievement is based on exams. The reason behind the problem according to a education specialist at Michigan State University, Zhao Yong, even with the nationwide initiative of widening enrollment methods, it is China’s college entrance exams that decides the standard of excellence.

Zhao also pointed that parents enroll their children unto pre-schools and kindergartens which guarantees passing the colleges entrance exams emphasizing more on earning credentials rather than learning. The sad fact is, pregnant mothers are pre-enrolling their unborn children to pre-schools and kindergartens because of the fear of limited primary schools getting full.

This is because of the heavy competition among primary schools which has grown intensively over the years. This brought the problem of too many young students pressured to go to school without the security of having an available preschool institution to attend.

In solution to the rising dilemma, Beijing will spend $737 million over 5 years to build 118 kindergarten buildings and for the enlargement of 300 more. But as long as China keeps on producing students with high scores but with ability, Zhao says “it won’t help China recover from its cheap labor economy”.

Becoming a doctor must mean passing a hardcore line up of organic chemistry, physics and the dreadful Medical College Admission Test also know as MCAT. This has largely become a tradition for most schools and a headache for someone aspiring for medical education.

However, certain debates came to question the necessity of the pure scientific approach regarding medical education. Con side believes the importance of social science and humanities in developing into the profession. Conversely, such subjects are barely considered minor ones in traditional perspective.

Dr. Kase, the unconventional founder of the Mount Sinai medical program points that humanities and social sciences makes up a caring and more humane doctor than being a merely scientific medical practitioner.

With such principle, the Mount Sinai Medical College does not put much focus on organic chemistry, physics and MCAT and refused to make it as a basis for college student admissions. Students agree to major in social sciences and humanities and just a basic in biology and chemistry. He also believes that science shouldn’t be a hindrance instead it must serve as an insight to the biology of human disease.

The debate have been existing even in the past years and it’s been revived through the recent study made by Dr. Kase himself along with medical school’s dean for medical education, Dr. Robert Muller. The study compared outcomes; 85 of their Humanities and Medicine Program with 606 of the traditional approach and find out equivalent academic performance.

Even though such findings favor Kase’ approach, the MCAT has been the standard for medical school rankings both Word Report and World News. This will made quite impossible for medical schools to drop the MCAT.

Meanwhile, Kase’ study found out that Humanities and Medicine Program students tend to be more sensitive doctors and twice likely to be psychiatrists and less than Kase expected to go into pediatrics. Also, students avoid going into fields of surgical subspecialties and anesthesiology.

Recently, 17 Madison County Schools applied for a grant offered by PE4Life. The grant will benefit the district in their participation in improving physical education and student nutrition.

With a grant amounting from $100,000 to $750,000, the county schools will implement new physical education curriculum including the Farristown Middle School which is scheduled to open in fall at Berea.

The 2010 Physical Education Program is a part of the Carol White Education Program. The PE4Life is a national non-profit organization which awards millions of dollars to schools and community-based organizations in promoting and improving physical and health education.

PE4life envisions a country healthy children and youth by increasing access to quality physical education solutions through and interactive and fun way. PE4Life offers professional development to educators and school administrators desiring for change and enhancement to their school and communities.

Madison County along with its administrators is looking forward to be included in the grantees this year despite being unfavorable last year. The county is confident to be chosen because of grant writer Artie Kamiya. According to Todd, Kamiya understands the mechanics and nature of the grant with its 30 years of experience. Kamiya is a retired P.E. teacher which they believe gives them a 33 percent success rate.

The county is also heavily supported by its central board office at laying the groundwork for coordinated school health which is the main concern of the grant for this year. Madison county schools have been extensively laying ground work on physical activity and nutrition which they believe is their ace and the key in winning the grant.

Despite the grant outcome, Madison County will still continue their mission in enhancing physical education, nutrition and health. And will still focus and put heavy attention on wellness and will always act as a supportive educational institute along with its administration.

The State Health Department conducted a study entitled, The Indian Youth Risk Behavior Study and found out that Indiana has a smoking rate of 23.5 percent which is beyond the national average of 19.5 percent. It also points that 10.7 percent of Indiana students had used smokeless tobacco in the 30 days previous to the study. It has become a rising dilemma for the state with its rising number of 7.3 percent in 2003.

In response to the growing problem of tobacco addiction, some students worldwide have solemnly taken part in promoting a tobacco-free society. Students of middle and high schools in Michigan City have joined the anti-tobacco campaign. The groups have been engaging in peer education activities under the Safe harbor Program.

The program is supervised and supported by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention Council with the recent participation of students in activities like; Kick Butts Day in March and World No Tobacco Day in May. “They have so much passion and initiative that they want to get the word out to their peers that smoking is bad for you,” said Sandy Gleim said, executive director of Healthy Communities of La Porte.

Other program launched is the “Quit Now Indiana”	–a contest executed by Healthy Communities where people are urged to quit smoking by winning prizes. The group Voice will also take part by passing out fliers and let citizens sign an anti-tobacco petition. Higgen, the program coordinator said that it’s been a successful year for the program.

The programs have been found effective; an example is a graduate from Elston Middle School Michigan who convinced her mother to a quit a 12-year smoking habit. The main target of the campaign is to educate the youth and women about the marketing tactics of tobacco companies.

Mount Anthony Union High School will now open its education portals to the globe. Students can now join in classes all over students worldwide. This is made possible with MAU Virtual High School. A selected number of qualified students will have the chance to have education online through the program.

Beginning this fall, students may enjoy the hassle-free and convenience of distance learning with different curriculum made by teachers worldwide. The program provides flexibility of study options enabling qualified students to dig through certain interests which are not included in their regular classes. It also expands learning with the global, national and local interactions online.

This provides expansion of course offerings for the school according to Kristyn Harrington (co-site coordinator of the program). Students can access online and assignments are due weekly.

Students will receive high school credit for the completion of the virtual school. Some students may also take the virtual high school program in substitute of their scheduled classes to have more time in the course work. Some would make it as additional in order to finish the course earlier.

Harrington emphasized the virtue of self motivation and excellent time management considering success in an online education. There will be a full support of instructors to their student so when students have questions or comments about the lessons, they can post in a forum or have a conversation with privately with their teacher.

To qualify in a Virtual High School, a student must secure a teacher and a counselor’s recommendation and take an online self assessment if the virtual high school fits the student. The virtual high school is granted to 25 qualified students each semester in recognition of the curriculum in anatomy and psychology course formulated a MAU teacher (Diane Moore) for the Virtual High School.

The program is on a first come first serve basis and recently more than half of the available slots are filled in. Students can enroll and fill in by contacting the nearest high school.

President Obama cited in his recent speech the problem of increased high school dropouts. Such kids experienced severe academic disengagements and minimal encouragement from school and homes. The No Child Left Behind policy demands that all high school student must earn a diploma and have technical training for future purposes. The policy addresses the problem of inability to complete high school education which is a major cause of unemployment. Without a high school diploma, it would be very hard to find a descent job compared to finishing high school. More often, it will always result to living in poverty, having children at a young age and health issues. The U.S. Census Bauru pointed that high school graduates can earn as much as 23% more per year compared to someone who did not receive a diploma. This is what the state government is concerned about.

On the same side, with the purpose of providing specialized knowledge to people of all ages and backgrounds with the most convenient way, Ashworth Online College teamed up with North Texas Jobs Corps to deliver accredited diploma to every youth from 16 to 24 years of age. By providing accessible career education, the partnership guarantees positive results. Job corps is a no cost education and career technical training program administered by the US Department of Labor aimed for the improvement of lives academic and technical training.

With this partnership, both parties will be able to maximize effort in offering distance education to all students, especially adult and working students. F. Milton Miller, EdD. (Ashworth Vice President, Education) said that Ashworth’s high school diploma programs are developed to specifically address the needs of working adults and non traditional high school students. Miller expressed his eagerness and excitement working with North Texas Job Corps which has the same ideology as them –teaching young people skills needed to become employable by completing their high school education.

Education will no longer be deprived and will be freely shared to any one on the web. Open Education –as defined by Wikipedia; a collective term that refers to forms of education in which knowledge, ideas or important aspects of teaching methodology or infrastructure are shared freely over the internet. Such education requires minimal requirements, an internet connection and basic knowledge about downloading programs and unzipping files. A current example is the Cape Town Open Education Declaration. It emerged trough a conference held on September 14 and 15, 2007 with the goal of promoting open resources and techniques concerning education.

Such principle closed the boundary of having educated without spending too much. Many universities has adopted the concept and been trying to upload education materials such as videos, audio files and other shared resources. These allowed almost anyone to study at their dream university without stepping on the campus. The Open Yale courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers at Yale University. With courses ranging from Astronomy department down to Religious studies, distance education students can browse through each courses provided with online materials, like video streams, html transcripts and mp3.

Another is the MITOpenCourseware by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Open education is made possible through OCW (Open Course Ware) and being utilized as an open virtual publication very available to the world. MIT OCW offers about 1,900 online courses and has dominated the high school department providing fun to know courses like; building a stereo and guitars as well as help for students taking AP math and science courses. A lot more universities are adopting the Open Course Ware program such as; university of Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins, the iTunes University, Berkeley, Duke, and Stanford University.

All schools in the district will have new principals. Principals’ assignment weren’t announced until few weeks before classes begin. This was made earlier than the past few years in order to give time for principals to make some plans especially they were expected to have new assignments. Superintendent Art Stellar said it’s been a general rule of thumb in Burke County to move principals to new schools in order to sharpen principals and also put a consideration to their career path. Stellar believe that there is no perfect principal for a school despite the surprised faces of parent’s loosing a popular principal. There are lots of options to choose from if they consider selecting principals outside but the school district suggest that they place principals inside the county and some of the principals will be assigned as assistant principals of merging schools. The N.C. Department of instruction will allocate finances for the assistant principals according to the number of student enrollment. This effort was made in order to line up the number of assistant principals with the state budget and to reduce school expenses. Also to end the practice of paying extra expenses using the local fund.

The county decided to merge six schools into three and each high school will have two assistant principals by 2010-11 and four middle schools will share two principals at once. The list of merging schools are; Mountain View and Hillcrest elementary into all new Mountain Crest Elementary School in Morganton, Drexel Primary’s K-2 program with Hallyburton Elementary third through fifth grades into Drexel Elementary School, two alternative high schools in Hildebran and Morganton into Hallyburton Academy. With the exchange of principals like; Lisa Lane Dale from Hillcrests succeeds Jill King in Mull Elementary School, Jill King succeeds Kathy Amos of Oak Hill Elementary, and Becky Roach from Rutherford College elementary will succeed Shance Mace of Ray Childers Elementary, and Ross Rumbaugh from Hallyburton succeeds Becky Roach. While all current middle school principals will remain in position.

Ross added that about 30% of its learners have already touched its program.

Ross stated that this program will serve as a good support for the school district upon earning more finances through this Distributive School Account Funding due to the mere fact that in every year, those students who have dropped out from their schooling will be seeking more convenient forms as they will be back their academic education. She also added that last year about 60 students have left the school district as they will be entering into the charter school that is about $350,000 less than of DSA school funding. Burger added this educational program serve as crucial aspect in the nation condition and there will be a tendency of losing for a mere amount of one third of their population especially that these kids will entirely be leaving their school district. Ross stated that this online program entirely cost a mere amount of $61,000 that includes the $19,000 consider as a renewal fee and about $42,000 for its financial cost expansion. With that, the director of business services who is Lynn Broyles stated that this financial funding came out from next school year financial budget. Teacher Lisa Kent have entirely pointed out that if this school district will entirely be receiving a mere amount of $6,000 for per child from the DSA, this would only take about 10 learners upon earning back the finances that been spent on unto the program. Burger added that Trustee Steve Nunn have asked that if learners will be considering this educational program as an easy way out aspect, the program will entirely meant for those learners who don’t have any other way out especially for those learners who got very serious life issues that been dealing with and wanted to a career development in the near future.
