Why?
The Europass is an initiative of the European Commission and was launched in 2002. The purpose of the Europass is to encourage mobility of workers and students by creating a description of skills and qualifications that can be clearly understood throughout Europe. In this way, the Europass is a key element in the European Union’s programme to ensure transparency for work and academic purposes in Europe.
In the first year since the launch of Europass, over 300,000 Europass CVs have been created online. And ever since that year, it hasn’t stopped gaining popularity. It is used a lot and asked for by employers. That why it is very important for students and workers to know about it existence.
5 documents
The Europass consists of 5 EU standardized documents that help you to describe yourself for your future school or workplace.
- Europass Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Europass Language Passport
- Europass Certificate Supplement
- Europass Diploma Supplement
- Europass Mobility
The first two documents you can fill in yourself. The three others have to be filled in and are issued by competent organizations.
How to obtain the documents?
You can create the Europass CV or Language Passport online and receive the completed version electronically (download or via email). The data will be saved in a database and you will be able to update it later. The second option is downloading the blanc template.
The Europass Mobility is completed by the home and host organisations involved in the mobility project in a language agreed between both organisations and the person concerned. Please contact the organisation sending you abroad and ask them to contact their National Europass Centre.
The Europass Certificate Supplement is issued by the authorities that award the original vocational certificate. Some countries have set up National inventories of Europass Certificate Supplements. If not, you have to contact the National Reference Point in your country.
The Europass Diploma Supplement is issued by the higher education institution that awarded the original diploma or degree.
Europass Curriculum Vitae (CV)
The Europass CV is probably the most important document from the Europass. The other 4 documents can be attached to it. The CV can be filled in by completing the different categories. The great advantage in comparison with a normal CV is that you certainly won’t forget anything and moreover all your skills and qualifications will be visible in the Europass. Moreover, the common format facilitates employers when assessing and comparing CVs.
Europass Language Passport
The Language Passport consists of 3 documents about your language skills: the Language Passport, the Language Biography and the Dossier.
Those allow you to assess your language skills at six levels in relation to five skills: listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production, writing.

Europass Certificate Supplement
The Europass Certificate Supplement is a document for people who hold a vocational, educational and training certificate. It makes the official document more easily understood, especially by employers or institutions outside the issuing country. However this certificate can not replace the original document.
Europass Diploma Supplement
The Europass Diploma Supplement can be issued to graduates of higher education institutions along with their degree or diploma. This supplement ensures the understanding of the value and components of higher education qualifications. Especially when you want to use them in another country, this can be very useful. Yet, the supplement cannot replace the original diploma or degree.
Europass Mobility
The Europass Mobility is a record of Europass Mobility Experiences. This is an organised period of time that a person spends in a European country to do an work placement, to do an academic exchange programme or to work for an NGO.
This experience is monitored by two organisation; one in the country of origin, one in the host country. Both organisations agree on the purpose, content and duration of the experience and a mentor is identified in the host country.
